What is a micro-inverter?

'Micro' - either meaning small, or chips. In this case it means a small inverter as opposed to a massive string inverter (also not chip related).

A micro inverter is a small device which converts the energy produced in a solar panel from DC (direct current) to AC (alternating current) so we can use it in our homes.

Unlike string or hybrid inverters which feature one, central inverter to convert the energy from all the panels on the roof, microinverters are paired one per panel.

The advantages of installing micro inverters compared to string or hybrid inverters are:

  • More generation – micro inverters operate earlier in the morning and later in the day. This is because they are able to still operate with very low power (when there isn’t much sun).

  • No single point of failure – as each panel has its own inverter, not one panel is linked to another. On string or hybrid inverters, multiple panels (or the whole array) are connected together. If one panel fails, underperforms or is shaded the whole system works to the lowest common denominator.

  • Safety – microinverters convert the energy from your panel locally and at low voltage. Hybrid or string systems require lots of panels to be connected in series, this means that the system becomes high voltage (up to 600v) and these high voltage cables need to be routed around the property to the central inverter.

  • Warranty – micro inverters from leading brands such as Enphase come with a 25 year warranty. This is as much as 4 times longer than the average string inverter.

  • Monitoring - each panels performance will be visible within your monitoring system. This feature is not possible with traditional string or hybrids as only the combined production is reported.

  • Shading – If you array suffers from shading from fixed obstructions (chimneys, vents, flues or dormers) then only the panels which are shaded will drop performance. Standard systems are unable to isolate panel performance and therefore the whole array will perform to the lowest performing panel.

Popular brands

There are multiple manufacturers offering micro inverters however, the standout products are produced by Enphase.

Enphase are the world leading manufacturers of micro inverters. They are also the only manufacturer to publish their failure rate of 1-3000. Meaning you’re more likely to suffer a panel failure than an inverter failure.

Price

Prices for Enphase’s IQ range of inverters starts from around £105 + VAT per inverter. You’ll also need to purchase an Enphase Envoy to monitor your production and system performance.
