It isn't one of the cheapest boilers you can buy.

And that's important, because the real question isn't whether the ecoTEC Plus is a good boiler. It very clearly is.

The question is whether it's good enough to justify paying more for it.

For homeowners who value build quality, hot-water performance, precise heating control and long-term serviceability, we think the answer is generally yes.

Vaillant itself was named Which? Recommended Brand for gas boilers in 2025, achieving five stars for both reliability and engineer recommendations.

But there are cheaper boilers capable of heating the average home perfectly well, so the ecoTEC Plus won't make sense for everyone.

The ecoTEC Plus is one of the strongest premium gas boilers currently available in the UK.

The Vaillant ecoTEC Plus examined during Heatable's hands-on video review.

Its main strengths are:

Its principal weakness is price.

If you're heating a small flat with one bathroom, you may get little practical benefit from paying the premium for an ecoTEC Plus over a competent, cheaper combi.

For medium and larger homes, particularly where hot-water performance and precise control matter, it becomes considerably easier to justify.

Vaillant ecoTEC Plus Specifications

The current, remastered ecoTEC Plus is available as both a combi and system boiler.

Vaillant currently offers the combi in the following outputs:

The boiler measures approximately 720mm high × 440mm wide × 352mm deep.

That isn't huge, but the ecoTEC Plus is not really designed to be the smallest cupboard boiler on the market.

If fitting your boiler inside a particularly tight kitchen cupboard is the overriding requirement, the more compact Vaillant ecoFIT pure may make more sense.

Vaillant has one of the strongest reliability reputations among the major UK boiler manufacturers.

More importantly, there is independent evidence behind that reputation.

In September 2025, Vaillant topped the Which? gas boiler table and was awarded Which? Recommended Brand status, receiving five stars for:

Engineer recommendations are particularly useful when evaluating a boiler manufacturer.

Heating engineers regularly see these appliances with the casing removed rather than simply interacting with a thermostat once a day, so their experience encompasses:

• Build quality

• Component accessibility

• Servicing

• Repairability

• Parts availability

• Common failures

One caveat is important.

The Which? result applies to Vaillant's gas boilers as a manufacturer, not exclusively to this generation of the ecoTEC Plus.

We therefore treat it as strong evidence about the manufacturer rather than pretending it is a controlled lifetime test of this individual model.

What Does the ecoTEC Plus Look Like Inside?

A boiler's appearance isn't particularly useful once you remove the white casing.

Its internal construction is considerably more interesting.

The ecoTEC Plus performs particularly well when it comes to hot-water delivery and modulation.

Hot-Water Flow Rates

Combi boilers produce hot water as you use it.

That means one of the most useful performance figures isn't merely the number printed after the boiler's name, but how many litres of hot water it can deliver per minute.

The ecoTEC Plus range runs from approximately:

12.4 litres per minute on the 26kW model up to around 19 litres per minute on the 40kW.

That is a meaningful difference.

Broadly speaking:

ecoTEC Plus 26

Best suited to smaller homes with relatively modest hot-water demand.

ecoTEC Plus 32

A strong all-round choice for small to medium-sized properties.

ecoTEC Plus 36

Better suited to homes where greater hot-water performance is required.

ecoTEC Plus 40

Designed for properties with relatively high combi-boiler hot-water demand.

There is also an ecoTEC Plus 40kW store model, which Vaillant specifically positions for larger homes requiring higher hot-water performance.

However, don't automatically buy the largest boiler because you enjoy having more kilowatts than your neighbours.

The incoming mains supply also matters.

Which Vaillant ecoTEC Plus Size Do I Need?

Bathroom count is a useful starting point, but it isn't sufficient to size a boiler properly.

The appropriate model depends on:

• Property heat loss

• Number and size of radiators

• Number of bathrooms

• Number of occupants

• Expected simultaneous hot-water use

• Incoming mains water pressure

• Incoming mains flow rate

A larger number on the front of the boiler does not necessarily mean your house will warm up faster.

For combi boilers, higher outputs are often primarily needed to satisfy hot-water demand.

A modern well-insulated four-bedroom house may actually require less space-heating output than a draughty three-bedroom Victorian property.

For that reason, the most appropriate boiler should be based on the actual property rather than bedroom count alone.

ecoTEC Plus Modulation

One of the less glamorous but more important features of the ecoTEC Plus is its ability to reduce its output when the property doesn't require full power.

Most boilers don't need to operate at maximum output for most of the heating season.

Once the house is close to its target temperature, a boiler that can reduce its output sufficiently can continue supplying smaller amounts of heat rather than constantly:

• firing → stopping → cooling → firing again

That repeated behaviour is known as cycling.

Good modulation can therefore help:

• Reduce unnecessary cycling

• Maintain steadier room temperatures

• Improve seasonal efficiency

• Potentially reduce wear on components

It isn't as visually exciting as controlling the heating from your phone, but from an engineering perspective, it's one of the ecoTEC Plus's more valuable features.

IoniDetect Technology

The remastered ecoTEC Plus includes Vaillant's IoniDetect combustion technology.

IoniDetect monitors combustion and allows the boiler to adapt its operation to help maintain efficient burning.

Vaillant says the system is designed to deliver greater efficiency, lower gas consumption and reduced wear and tear.

Is IoniDetect worth paying extra for?

It's a useful piece of engineering.

But we wouldn't recommend choosing the ecoTEC Plus solely because the words IoniDetect sound reassuringly expensive.

When buying a boiler, we'd prioritise:

• Correct sizing

• Hot-water performance

• Modulation

• Controls

• Installer quality

• Guarantee

• Installed price

IoniDetect strengthens the overall package rather than being the sole reason to buy it.

Controls & Features of the Vaillant ecoTEC Plus

This section of the previous review needed updating because the current ecoTEC Plus has moved beyond Vaillant's older vSMART setup.

The remastered ecoTEC Plus is now Smart Home Ready and designed to work with Vaillant's current connected control ecosystem, including myVAILLANT connect.

ecoTEC Plus Control Panel

The front interface gives access to the boiler's main settings and operating information.

The major upgrade is the wi-fi capability, allowing you to check things like your gas consumption, performance and fault codes.

However, this capability does require a wifi card, so worth bearing in mind if that is something that you want.

myVAILLANT Connect

With a compatible setup, myVAILLANT connect allows the heating system to communicate with Vaillant's connected controls and app ecosystem.

Being able to adjust your heating from your phone is convenient.

But the more interesting advantage of a communicating control is what can happen between the thermostat and boiler.

Instead of merely demanding:

OFF

compatible modulation controls can help the boiler adjust its output according to the heating demand.

That can help maintain more stable temperatures and improve efficiency.

In other words, smart heating is more useful when the "smart" part actually affects how the boiler operates rather than simply giving your thermostat Wi-Fi.

Quiet Operation

Vaillant has long emphasised low operating noise across its domestic boiler range, and ecoTEC products have received Quiet Mark recognition.

For most homes, boiler noise shouldn't be a deciding factor.

But it can matter when the appliance is installed near:

• Home office

• Living room

• Open-plan kitchen

• Other frequently occupied space

All gas boilers will make some noise while operating.

The goal is a boiler you don't particularly notice, rather than one that sounds like it's considering take-off.

However, that can be extended to up to 10 years when fitted by an eligible myREWARDS installer and registered in accordance with Vaillant's conditions.

Vaillant specifies that eligibility also depends on installation with the relevant Boiler Protection Kit or Advanced Boiler Protection Kit. Vaillant

That distinction matters.

You may see:

"10-year Vaillant guarantee"

advertised by installers.

That doesn't mean every ecoTEC Plus purchased anywhere automatically carries ten years of protection.

The standard cover is five years.

The longer term is available through qualifying installations.

Qualifying Vaillant installations through Heatable are available with extended protection, so always check the exact guarantee shown with your boiler quote.

A long guarantee is valuable, but don't choose a boiler solely by finding the biggest number printed inside a badge.

• Are annual services mandatory?

Ten years is only useful if the protection remains valid for ten years.

That means boiler-only merchant prices aren't particularly useful when you're trying to understand what the replacement will actually cost.
