The Vaillant ecoTEC Plus is one of the best-known premium combi boilers in the UK, combining strong hot-water performance with smart controls, sophisticated combustion management and Vaillant's well-established reputation among heating engineers.
It isn't one of the cheapest boilers you can buy.
And that's important, because the real question isn't whether the ecoTEC Plus is a good boiler. It very clearly is.
The question is whether it's good enough to justify paying more for it.
For homeowners who value build quality, hot-water performance, precise heating control and long-term serviceability, we think the answer is generally yes.
Vaillant itself was named Which? Recommended Brand for gas boilers in 2025, achieving five stars for both reliability and engineer recommendations.
But there are cheaper boilers capable of heating the average home perfectly well, so the ecoTEC Plus won't make sense for everyone.

Vaillant ecoTEC Plus: Our Verdict
Heatable Rating: 4.5/5
The ecoTEC Plus is one of the strongest premium gas boilers currently available in the UK.

The Vaillant ecoTEC Plus examined during Heatable's hands-on video review.
Its main strengths are:
Excellent hot-water performance
A wide choice of outputs
Strong modulation
IoniDetect combustion technology
Smart-control compatibility
Excellent manufacturer reputation among heating engineers
Five-year standard guarantee, extendable to up to 10 years on qualifying installations
Its principal weakness is price.
If you're heating a small flat with one bathroom, you may get little practical benefit from paying the premium for an ecoTEC Plus over a competent, cheaper combi.
For medium and larger homes, particularly where hot-water performance and precise control matter, it becomes considerably easier to justify.
Our ecoTEC Plus scores:
Category | Heatable |
Reliability | 5/5 |
Performance | 5/5 |
Controls & features | 4.5/5 |
Guarantee | 4.5/5 |
Value for money | 3.5/5 |
Overall | 4.5/5 |
We deliberately don't give the ecoTEC Plus five stars for value.
It's a premium boiler with a premium price. Calling that perfect value would make the rating system fairly pointless.
How We Reviewed the Vaillant ecoTEC Plus
This review combines Heatable's hands-on examination of the Vaillant ecoTEC Plus for our accompanying video review with Vaillant's technical documentation, current product specifications, guarantee conditions, independent customer feedback and third-party boiler reliability data.
We assessed the ecoTEC Plus across:
Build and design
Hot-water performance
Heating output and modulation
Controls
Internal components and serviceability
Efficiency technology
Guarantee
Manufacturer reliability
Current price
Value compared with alternative boilers
Where evidence relates to Vaillant as a manufacturer rather than specifically to the ecoTEC Plus, we've made that distinction clear.

Vaillant ecoTEC Plus Specifications
The current, remastered ecoTEC Plus is available as both a combi and system boiler.
Vaillant currently offers the combi in the following outputs:
26kW
32kW
36kW
40kW
40kW store model for homes with particularly high hot-water demand
The system range extends from 10kW through to 35kW. Vaillant confirms the current output range on its product documentation.
ecoTEC Plus combi specifications
Model | Hot-water output | Approx. hot-water flow rate | Typical application |
ecoTEC Plus 26 | 26kW | 12.4l/min | Smaller homes |
ecoTEC Plus 32 | 32kW | 15.2l/min | Small-medium homes |
ecoTEC Plus 36 | 36kW | 17.0l/min | Medium-larger homes |
ecoTEC Plus 40 | 40kW | 19.0l/min | Higher hot-water demand |
The boiler measures approximately 720mm high × 440mm wide × 352mm deep.
That isn't huge, but the ecoTEC Plus is not really designed to be the smallest cupboard boiler on the market.
If fitting your boiler inside a particularly tight kitchen cupboard is the overriding requirement, the more compact Vaillant ecoFIT pure may make more sense.
Main Features of the Vaillant ecoTEC Plus
The current ecoTEC Plus includes:
ErP A-rated heating performance
26kW to 40kW combi outputs
Hot-water flow rates of up to approximately 19 litres per minute
IoniDetect combustion management
myVAILLANT connect compatibility
Smart Home Ready functionality
Low modulation capability
Five-year standard manufacturer guarantee
Guarantee extension to up to 10 years on qualifying installations
Quiet operation
LPG adaptability on selected models
Combi and system configurations
Vaillant describes the latest ecoTEC Plus as the "Original Remastered", reflecting the fact that this generation incorporates substantially newer controls and combustion technology rather than merely replacing the front panel.
Vaillant ecoTEC Plus Reliability
Heatable reliability score: 5/5
Vaillant has one of the strongest reliability reputations among the major UK boiler manufacturers.
More importantly, there is independent evidence behind that reputation.
In September 2025, Vaillant topped the Which? gas boiler table and was awarded Which? Recommended Brand status, receiving five stars for:
Reliability
Engineer recommendations Vaillant
Engineer recommendations are particularly useful when evaluating a boiler manufacturer.
Heating engineers regularly see these appliances with the casing removed rather than simply interacting with a thermostat once a day, so their experience encompasses:
Build quality
Component accessibility
Servicing
Repairability
Parts availability
Common failures
One caveat is important.
The Which? result applies to Vaillant's gas boilers as a manufacturer, not exclusively to this generation of the ecoTEC Plus.
We therefore treat it as strong evidence about the manufacturer rather than pretending it is a controlled lifetime test of this individual model.
What Does the ecoTEC Plus Look Like Inside?
A boiler's appearance isn't particularly useful once you remove the white casing.
Its internal construction is considerably more interesting.

The internal layout of the Vaillant ecoTEC Plus as examined during Heatable's video review.
During servicing and repairs, the accessibility and layout of these components become important.
A well-designed boiler should give an engineer sensible access to commonly serviced components without requiring the mechanical equivalent of keyhole surgery.
Vaillant Customer Reviews
Vaillant also performs strongly with customers.
As of September 2026, Vaillant UK has a Trustpilot score of 4.6/5 from more than 23,000 reviews, with 79% currently awarding five stars. Trustpilot
That's impressive, but it needs interpreting properly.
Trustpilot reviews cover the wider Vaillant customer experience, including:
Boiler servicing
Repairs
Engineers
Customer support
Heat pumps
Other Vaillant products
So a 4.6 Trustpilot score doesn't mean the ecoTEC Plus itself has a reliability score of 4.6/5.
It tells us that satisfaction with Vaillant's broader customer experience is high.
That's still useful. It just isn't the same thing.
Vaillant ecoTEC Plus Performance
Heatable performance score: 5/5
The ecoTEC Plus performs particularly well when it comes to hot-water delivery and modulation.
Hot-Water Flow Rates
Combi boilers produce hot water as you use it.
That means one of the most useful performance figures isn't merely the number printed after the boiler's name, but how many litres of hot water it can deliver per minute.
The ecoTEC Plus range runs from approximately:
12.4 litres per minute on the 26kW model up to around 19 litres per minute on the 40kW.
That is a meaningful difference.
Broadly speaking:
ecoTEC Plus 26
Best suited to smaller homes with relatively modest hot-water demand.
ecoTEC Plus 32
A strong all-round choice for small to medium-sized properties.
ecoTEC Plus 36
Better suited to homes where greater hot-water performance is required.
ecoTEC Plus 40
Designed for properties with relatively high combi-boiler hot-water demand.
There is also an ecoTEC Plus 40kW store model, which Vaillant specifically positions for larger homes requiring higher hot-water performance.
However, don't automatically buy the largest boiler because you enjoy having more kilowatts than your neighbours.
The incoming mains supply also matters.
A boiler capable of delivering 19 litres per minute cannot magically create 19 litres per minute if the property's incoming water supply can't provide it.
Which Vaillant ecoTEC Plus Size Do I Need?
Bathroom count is a useful starting point, but it isn't sufficient to size a boiler properly.
The appropriate model depends on:
Property heat loss
Number and size of radiators
Number of bathrooms
Number of occupants
Expected simultaneous hot-water use
Incoming mains water pressure
Incoming mains flow rate
A larger number on the front of the boiler does not necessarily mean your house will warm up faster.
For combi boilers, higher outputs are often primarily needed to satisfy hot-water demand.
A modern well-insulated four-bedroom house may actually require less space-heating output than a draughty three-bedroom Victorian property.
For that reason, the most appropriate boiler should be based on the actual property rather than bedroom count alone.

ecoTEC Plus Modulation
One of the less glamorous but more important features of the ecoTEC Plus is its ability to reduce its output when the property doesn't require full power.
Vaillant states that the ecoTEC Plus can reduce its output to around 16% of maximum power under lower heating demand. Vaillant
Why does that matter?
Most boilers don't need to operate at maximum output for most of the heating season.
Once the house is close to its target temperature, a boiler that can reduce its output sufficiently can continue supplying smaller amounts of heat rather than constantly:
firing → stopping → cooling → firing again
That repeated behaviour is known as cycling.
Good modulation can therefore help:
Reduce unnecessary cycling
Maintain steadier room temperatures
Improve seasonal efficiency
Potentially reduce wear on components
It isn't as visually exciting as controlling the heating from your phone, but from an engineering perspective, it's one of the ecoTEC Plus's more valuable features.
IoniDetect Technology
The remastered ecoTEC Plus includes Vaillant's IoniDetect combustion technology.
IoniDetect monitors combustion and allows the boiler to adapt its operation to help maintain efficient burning.
Vaillant says the system is designed to deliver greater efficiency, lower gas consumption and reduced wear and tear.
In practical terms, it means the boiler has finer control over the combustion process rather than relying on completely fixed operating parameters.
Is IoniDetect worth paying extra for?
It's a useful piece of engineering.
But we wouldn't recommend choosing the ecoTEC Plus solely because the words IoniDetect sound reassuringly expensive.
When buying a boiler, we'd prioritise:
Correct sizing
Hot-water performance
Modulation
Controls
Installer quality
Guarantee
Installed price
IoniDetect strengthens the overall package rather than being the sole reason to buy it.
Controls & Features of the Vaillant ecoTEC Plus
Heatable controls and features score: 4.5/5
This section of the previous review needed updating because the current ecoTEC Plus has moved beyond Vaillant's older vSMART setup.
The remastered ecoTEC Plus is now Smart Home Ready and designed to work with Vaillant's current connected control ecosystem, including myVAILLANT connect.
ecoTEC Plus Control Panel
The front interface gives access to the boiler's main settings and operating information.
The major upgrade is the wi-fi capability, allowing you to check things like your gas consumption, performance and fault codes.
However, this capability does require a wifi card, so worth bearing in mind if that is something that you want.
myVAILLANT Connect
With a compatible setup, myVAILLANT connect allows the heating system to communicate with Vaillant's connected controls and app ecosystem.
Vaillant specifically lists precise heating control and energy optimisation through myVAILLANT connect among the current ecoTEC Plus's main features. Vaillant
Being able to adjust your heating from your phone is convenient.
But the more interesting advantage of a communicating control is what can happen between the thermostat and boiler.
Instead of merely demanding:
ON
or:
OFF
compatible modulation controls can help the boiler adjust its output according to the heating demand.
That can help maintain more stable temperatures and improve efficiency.
In other words, smart heating is more useful when the "smart" part actually affects how the boiler operates rather than simply giving your thermostat Wi-Fi.
Quiet Operation
Vaillant has long emphasised low operating noise across its domestic boiler range, and ecoTEC products have received Quiet Mark recognition.
For most homes, boiler noise shouldn't be a deciding factor.
But it can matter when the appliance is installed near:
A bedroom
Home office
Living room
Open-plan kitchen
Other frequently occupied space
All gas boilers will make some noise while operating.
The goal is a boiler you don't particularly notice, rather than one that sounds like it's considering take-off.
Vaillant ecoTEC Plus Warranty
Heatable guarantee score: 4.5/5
The current ecoTEC Plus comes with a five-year standard Vaillant guarantee.
However, that can be extended to up to 10 years when fitted by an eligible myREWARDS installer and registered in accordance with Vaillant's conditions.
Vaillant specifies that eligibility also depends on installation with the relevant Boiler Protection Kit or Advanced Boiler Protection Kit. Vaillant
That distinction matters.
You may see:
"10-year Vaillant guarantee"
advertised by installers.
That doesn't mean every ecoTEC Plus purchased anywhere automatically carries ten years of protection.
The standard cover is five years.
The longer term is available through qualifying installations.
What does Heatable offer?
Qualifying Vaillant installations through Heatable are available with extended protection, so always check the exact guarantee shown with your boiler quote.
A long guarantee is valuable, but don't choose a boiler solely by finding the biggest number printed inside a badge.
Also check:
Who provides the guarantee?
Does it cover parts and labour?
Are annual services mandatory?
What registration requirements apply?
Are filters or other accessories required?
What exclusions apply?
Ten years is only useful if the protection remains valid for ten years.
Vaillant ecoTEC Plus Price
Heatable value score: 3.5/5
There isn't much point pretending otherwise:
The ecoTEC Plus is expensive.
Vaillant positions it as a premium boiler, and its pricing reflects that.
The exact installed cost depends on:
Output
Existing boiler type
Boiler location
Flue requirements
Controls
Pipework
Whether the boiler is being relocated
Whether you're converting from another system type
Additional installation work
That means boiler-only merchant prices aren't particularly useful when you're trying to understand what the replacement will actually cost.
The figure that matters is the fully installed price for your particular home.

Is the ecoTEC Plus Worth the Extra Money?
Potentially.
But not automatically.
The ecoTEC Plus gives you:
Excellent hot-water performance
Very good modulation
Sophisticated combustion management
Modern controls
Strong manufacturer support
Excellent engineer reputation
Long guarantee potential
Those are genuine advantages.
However, none of them means every property needs an ecoTEC Plus.
If you live in a small one-bathroom property with modest hot-water demand, a cheaper boiler may deliver virtually indistinguishable comfort.
The ecoTEC Plus becomes easier to justify where:
Hot-water demand is higher
You intend to remain in the property long term
You value premium controls
Low modulation is important
You prioritise engineer familiarity and parts support
You would rather pay more upfront for a premium manufacturer
Vaillant ecoTEC Plus Review: Final Verdict
The Vaillant ecoTEC Plus earns its position as one of the UK's strongest premium combi boilers.
Its appeal isn't based solely on the badge.
There is genuine engineering substance here:
Strong hot-water performance
Wide output choice
Good modulation
IoniDetect combustion technology
Modern smart controls
Strong manufacturer backing
Excellent engineer sentiment
Up to ten years of guarantee protection on qualifying installations
Vaillant's position as Which? Recommended Brand for gas boilers in 2025, including five-star reliability and engineer recommendation scores, reinforces that reputation. Vaillant
The trade-off is price.
For a small property with straightforward heating needs, the ecoTEC Plus can be more boiler than you actually need.
But for homeowners looking for a premium boiler with excellent hot-water performance, sophisticated controls and strong long-term manufacturer support, it is very difficult to argue against.
