How Does the Combipack 4i Work?
While there are a whole host of features to the Combipack 4i, in this section we’ll provide a broad summary of how the smart thermostat functions.
Firstly, when your Combipack 4i is in AUTO mode, it will work at set times and with set temperatures based on how you’ve programmed it.
There are six programs to choose from in setting the temperature for certain times of the day.
You should be aware that Combipack 4i does not come with an OFF time. Instead, there are higher and lower temperature settings.
If you want your thermostat to turn off at specific times of the day, be sure to set this time to feature a low temperature.
The Combipack 4i will ultimately only turn on if your room temperature is below the set temperature point for the then current time period.
Mounting and Installation Instructions
Note: Since a professional must mount and install a Combipack 4, most readers will be more interested in how to use this thermostat.
If this is you, skip to the following section ‘Operating instructions’.
So, how do you set up the Combipack 4i? For starters, you cannot install the Combipack 4i yourself.
Instead, you’ll need to hire a qualified electrician or another suitable professional.
Setting up the Combipack 4i involves mounting and installing the thermostat and installing the receiver.
Starting with the actual thermostat, while it can be mounted, it can also be installed free-standing. Conveniently, a stand is included.
However, for a mounted setup, the following steps are required:
The ideal mounting height is 150cm above floor level.
More specifically, if having the thermostat wall mounted, it should be done so in the room where you are to control your heating. Moreover, the installation spot should ideally be based on where the sensor can measure the room temperature as best as possible. Lastly, the mounting location should also ensure your thermostat will avoid direct exposure to sunlight and other sources of heating or cooling.
The mounting plate must be screwed directly into the wall with the screws that come with the Combipack 4i.
The Combipack 4i may now be added to the mounting plate.
At the front of the thermostat, the flap must be lowered. This comes with a battery compartment that is located under the buttons. Downward pressure must be applied to take the cover off.
Finally, the hired professional must insert two AA batteries. This will power up the thermostat. The battery compartment may then be closed shut.
As for setting up the wireless RF1A-OT receiver, here are the steps involved:
The receiver should be mounted to the wall such that it is under 20 metres from the Combipack 4i thermostat. Moreover, the receiver has to be installed over 100cm from any electronic device (e.g. TV, microwave, Wi-Fi).
The fastening screw must then be slackened on the bottom end of the receiver. This has to be done with a Phillips screwdriver. The receiver may be opened 180 degrees. It’s important to note that the RF1A-OT receiver is hinged.
Next, the qualified professional may screw the receiver to the wall. This can be done with the screws provided.
Next, the terminal block’s protection cover should be removed.
The wires must then be fitted inside the terminal block per the wiring diagram of EPH Controls’ official instructions.
Lastly, the cover should be closed and the fastening screw tightened.
Operating Instructions
There are tons of operations associated with the Combipack 4 including keypad lock and unlock, temporary override, backlight mode selection and replacing the batteries.
Therefore, we’ll only discuss some of the most important operating instructions today.
For more details, see EPH Controls’ official instructions for the Combipack 4i.
How to Reset Your Thermostat
This is how you can reset a Combipack 4i:
Press the reset button, which can be found on the side of your thermostat. You will then see ‘rst no’ appear on display.
Next, press + button (i.e., set point increase button) which can be found at the top right of the thermostat. Now, you will see ‘rst yes’ on the screen.
Simply press the ‘OK’ button and the thermostat will reset.
Choosing the Date, Time and Programming Mode
There is a simple process to selecting the date, time and programming mode that suits you (skip to the next section if you’d like to learn what each programming mode means).
Here are the steps required:
Press the ‘Time’ button. Once you do, the year will begin flashing. You will now need to set the current time and day through the five steps that follow so that your thermostat has accurate time and date information to work with.
Press the + or - buttons to change the year. The plus and minus buttons may be found at the top right of the thermostat. Press ‘OK’ once you’ve reached the correct year.
Press + or - to change the month. Again, when you’re happy, press ‘OK’.
Press + or - to alter the hour before pressing ‘OK’ when satisfied.
Press + or - to change the minute, then press ‘OK’.
Press + or - to switch between the 5/2 Day mode, 7 Day Mode and 24 Hour Mode. Press ‘OK’.
Press + or - to turn Day Light Saving Time on or off. Press ‘OK’.
Finally, press the ‘AUTO’ button (which can be found on the far left of the central panel of buttons) and wait five seconds. The thermostat will then return to normal with the new settings programmed.
Programming Modes
The Combipack 4i comes with several programming modes, namely, 5/2 Day mode, 7-Day mode and 24-Hour mode.
5/2 Day mode treats Monday to Friday as one block and the weekend as a second block.
Therefore, you can differentiate the heating settings from weekdays to weekends.
As for the 7-Day mode, this programming mode allows you to set specific heating times and temperatures unique to each day of the week.
This naturally offers the most customisation if you’d like to schedule your heating.
What’s more, you can program up to six individual times and temperatures for each day of the week using this mode.
Lastly, the 24-hour mode simply involves programming all seven days of the week as a single block (i.e., each day would be treated the same).
You would be able to use six individual times and temperatures but with the same routine repeating every day.
Holiday Mode
The holiday function will allow your heating to remain off while you are away.
Just as a note, turning your heating off entirely for a week or longer during the winter months may come with a risk of your boiler or pipework freezing over.
Therefore, if you are going on holiday in the winter, you should consult with a heating engineer to check whether or not you should keep your heating off entirely for this time period.
For those with an old boiler, of course, leaving it on while away during the winter may come with its own risks, so again, whatever the case, if going away in winter, it would be best to check what to do with a professional.
Here is how to turn on the holiday function:
Press the ‘HOL’ button (which you can find near the middle of the central row of buttons between the buttons ‘PROG’ and ‘MOD’). ‘Holiday From’ will then appear on the screen. This is asking you when you want the holiday mode to begin. You may want to set this to the day you are leaving if it is a warm time of the year and you’ve no need for the heating. However, if you’d need some warmth on the day you are going, it’s best to set it to the day after you leave.
Press + or - to set the year before pressing ‘OK’.
Press + or - to change the month. Press ‘OK’.
Press + or - to set the day. Press ‘OK’.
Press + or - to alter the hour. Press ‘OK’.
‘Holiday To’ will now appear. You will be asked to set the year, month, day and hour. Take the same approach as above (pressing ‘OK’ to verify at each step) but, of course, by setting the time you want the holiday function to last. In a similar way to ‘Holiday From’, you should set it to last until the day before you arrive home if you want to arrive at a heated home or to the day you arrive if it is likely to be warm. Of course, with the British weather being unpredictable, we’d recommend setting this to the date before you arrive home!
