How Do Old and Current Worcester Boilers Differ?

There is a range of noticeable differences between old and existing Worcester boilers.

For starters, most of the current combi boilers produced by Worcester Bosch offer 93-94% efficiency, whereas the majority of discontinued combi boilers from the brand came with efficiency levels of around 90-92%.

What’s more, discontinued Worcester boilers generally featured shorter guarantees than the brand’s boilers on the market today.

Old Worcester boilers were not markedly cheaper or costlier than those currently available.

The only key difference is that the current most expensive Worcester boilers are several thousand pounds dearer than the most expensive old Worcester boilers.

The max central heating power output range of discontinued Worcester boilers is 20kW to 42kW.

Most Worcester boilers on sale today fall in this range, although some of their heat-only and system boilers offer lower or higher outputs than any old Worcester boilers.

Ultimately, the key differences between old and new Worcester boilers are that those currently on sale tend to be more efficient, come with better guarantees and there is generally have a wider range of options available, particularly in relation to the central heating output.

How Can I Tell How Old My Boiler Is?

Whether you have a current Worcester model, an old one or a model from a different boiler brand entirely, finding out the age of your boiler is generally straightforward enough.

By identifying the serial number of your boiler (which will likely appear on a sticker on the surface of your boiler), you can contact your boiler manufacturer to find out how old the boiler in question is.

If you cannot find a serial number, it’s still worth contacting the manufacturing company as they may be able to help you figure out when the boiler was installed all the same.

If your boiler was installed 10+ years ago, it is likely nearing the end of its lifespan. When a boiler is beyond economic repair, it’s time to have it replaced.

Of course, with the ongoing cost of living crisis, a boiler replacement may seem impossible for many households.

However, in such situations, it’s possible to purchase a boiler on finance. In other words, buy now and pay later.

FAQ's

Worcester, Bosch Group was established in Worcester in 1962. It has since grown from a small engineering business to one of the UK's strongest and most renowned boiler manufacturers. In fact, in our view, Worcester Bosh is the best UK boiler brand out there. By all measures, Worcester is likely to have a prosperous future for many years to come.
We cannot say with certainty the reasons why, however, there are two likely factors that explain this. For one, boilers have become more durable and high-performing in general as the years have gone by, allowing boiler brands to increase their guarantees/warranties accordingly. What’s more, Worcester has likely tended toward increasing their guarantees to better appeal to customers as the years have gone by.
In general, purchasing a used boiler should be approached with great caution. Ultimately, for a combination of safety and reliability reasons, it would be best not to. However, if you’re particularly interested in buying a used Worcester boiler from a discontinued range, you should consult with a qualified and competent Gas Safe Register engineer. They can then look at any used boiler on the market for you and evaluate it to ensure that it meets all safety requirements. Beyond that, they’ll need to confirm that it works precisely as expected upon installation. However, naturally, a used boiler is not going to have as long a life expectancy as a brand-new boiler. Either way, having a qualified heating engineer analyse in detail and install a used boiler is critical to ensure you do not have an unsafe boiler installed. If you were to, at best, it would be on its last legs pretty soon and at worst, it could pose a potentially lethal hazard. Again, erring on the side of caution, we do not recommend purchasing a second-hand boiler.
