The Bosch Compress 5800i AW is a premium air-to-water heat pump with three particularly strong qualities - it is quiet, compact and unusually capable at higher flow temperatures.
Its published sound-power level starts at just 40dB(A), making it one of the quieter units in its class. Its maximum 75°C flow temperature also gives installers more flexibility when working with existing radiators.
However, that does not mean every radiator can stay or that the system should run at 75°C every day.
The range is limited to 4kW, 5kW and 7kW models, so larger or particularly heat-hungry properties will need to look elsewhere. The guarantee can also vary depending on the installer and how the system is registered.
For an appropriately sized small or medium home, though, the Compress 5800i AW is a very polished bit of kit.

What is the Bosch Compress 5800i AW?
The Compress 5800i AW is an air-to-water monobloc heat pump.
It collects low-level heat from the outdoor air, raises its temperature using a compressor and transfers that energy into the water circulating around your heating system.
Yes, it can still collect heat when the weather is cold.
The garden does not need to be enjoying a private Spanish summer.
As a monobloc system, the complete refrigerant circuit is contained inside the outdoor unit. Water pipes connect it to the equipment indoors, reducing the amount of refrigerant work required inside the property.
A complete installation will normally include:

If you currently have a combi boiler, the cylinder is the important bit.

Those applications are deliberately rough.
A heat pump should be selected using a proper room-by-room heat-loss calculation - not the number of bedrooms, the output of your old boiler or an installer having a thoughtful stare at your external wall.
The output available also changes with outdoor and water temperatures. That is why the 7kW model, for example, has a published maximum output of 6.71kW at -7°C air and 35°C flow, but 7.97kW at warmer A7/W35 test conditions.
The name on the box is not the complete design calculation.
The relatively narrow range is one of the 5800i’s main limitations. If your calculated heat loss is comfortably above 7kW, Worcester Bosch and several competing manufacturers offer larger models.

Worcester Bosch is one of the most established heating brands in the UK, with a substantial installer, servicing and spare-parts network.
That matters more than people think.
A heat pump could be efficient enough to warm Windsor Castle using the ambient heat from a lukewarm sandwich, but it is not terribly useful if nobody nearby can repair it.
The Compress 5800i AW also uses a monobloc design, keeping the refrigerant circuit sealed within the outdoor unit. This simplifies the system inside the property and can reduce installation complexity.
Bosch’s pre-plumbed cylinder option integrates many of the hydraulic components installers would otherwise need to assemble separately.
Fewer improvised bits of plant-room sculpture is generally welcome.
The small caveat is age.
The 5800i is a comparatively recent product, so it does not yet have the same volume of long-term UK field data as older ranges such as the Mitsubishi Ecodan.
That does not make it unreliable. It simply means some of its reliability score comes from Bosch’s engineering record and support infrastructure rather than fifteen winters of model-specific evidence.

A SCOP of 4.54 means the heat pump can theoretically deliver around 4.54 units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed across the relevant test season.
That is an excellent figure.
It is not, however, a promise that every home will achieve exactly 4.54.

The figures also reveal something important: efficiency falls as flow temperature rises.
At 35°C, the Compress 5800i looks extremely efficient. At 55°C, its published SCOP drops closer to three.
That is not a Bosch problem. It is how heat pumps work.
The less temperature lift the compressor has to produce, the more efficiently it can operate.
The 75°C flow temperature
The ability to produce flow temperatures up to 75°C is one of the Compress 5800i AW’s headline features.
It makes the system more flexible for retrofit projects, particularly where an older property already has radiators designed around a boiler.
However, 75°C should be treated as spare capability - not the daily cruising speed.
It is like owning a car capable of 150mph. Reassuring on the specification sheet, but probably not how you should approach the school run.

Running regularly at higher temperatures also changes the picture.
At a SCOP of around three, useful heat would cost approximately 8.7p per kWh at the same electricity price.
That is why installing a high-temperature heat pump and then forcing it to behave like an old boiler can quickly spoil the economics.
The 5800i can potentially compete very well with gas in an efficient, properly designed home.
It is not guaranteed to reduce every household’s bill.

Sound pressure and sound power are not interchangeable. Sound power describes the acoustic energy produced by the unit, while sound pressure is what may be measured at a particular position and distance.
In normal-person language: the 5800i is impressively quiet, but you will still hear it when standing nearby.
Fan speed, compressor load, defrosting, mounting and surrounding walls can all influence perceived noise. Poor positioning can also reflect sound towards windows or neighbouring properties.
An installer should therefore complete an acoustic assessment rather than simply positioning it wherever the wheelie bins used to live.
For terraces, semis and homes with close neighbours, its low noise output is a genuine advantage.
Controls and smart features
The Compress 5800i AW can connect to Bosch’s HomeCom Easy app using the supplied Connect-Key internet gateway.
Depending on the final controls package, homeowners can use the system to:

Bosch also advertises remote system monitoring from its UK team. Its homeowner literature notes that this monitoring requires the internet gateway and a Wi-Fi connection, and may end automatically after 12 months.

“App compatible” and “everything required for app control is fitted and commissioned” are not always the same sentence.
R290 refrigerant: why it matters
The Compress 5800i AW uses R290 refrigerant, better known as propane.
Before anyone starts picturing a patio heater connected to the radiators, the refrigerant is sealed within the outdoor unit.
R290 has a published Global Warming Potential of just three, substantially lower than commonly used synthetic refrigerants such as R32.
It also has useful thermodynamic properties at higher temperatures, helping the 5800i achieve its maximum 75°C flow temperature.
There are safety considerations.
R290 is flammable, so the outdoor unit must be positioned according to Bosch’s protected-area and clearance requirements. Windows, doors, drains and potential ignition sources can affect where it may be installed.
That is another reason to insist on a detailed site survey.
The result should be a future-conscious refrigerant and a safe installation—not an outdoor unit wedged beneath the kitchen window because the pipe run was slightly more convenient.

Worcester Bosch’s current guarantee information says heat pumps can receive up to seven years of cover, depending on the installer’s qualifications and position within the manufacturer’s loyalty scheme.
That is competitive, but “up to” is carrying out some fairly heavy lifting.

Whether parts, labour and call-outs are included
Which indoor components are covered
Whether the cylinder has separate cover

The scheme is installer-led. An MCS-certified installer applies for the grant and deducts the approved amount from your quotation.
