Explore the top LPG boilers available in the UK, their efficiency, and why they’re a smart choice for homes off the gas grid.
Looking to go off-grid or already do and want to replace your LPG boiler? Here are our picks of the best LPG boilers on the market right now.
Key points:
Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, and Viessmann are widely recognised as the leading brands for LPG boilers, due to their efficiency, installation costs, and suitability for different property sizes.
Modern LPG boilers are much more efficient than older models.
The more efficient an LPG boiler is, the more it’ll save you on energy bills.
Premium boilers might cost more upfront, but they’ll typically last longer and require less maintenance than cheaper models.
Consider both customer reviews and professional recommendations to make an informed decision.
How do we define what the ‘best’ boiler is?
We look at everything important there is to look at when deciding what makes the best boiler. The brand, the size of the boiler, how long the warranty is, and the efficiency rating are all important factors.
With energy prices as high as they are right now, we place a good deal of importance on efficiency, as you’ll save more money with a more efficient boiler.
But the choice is yours, at the end of the day. We’re just here to try and help you pick the boiler that works best for your needs.
We’re drawing on our extensive knowledge earned from installing over 10,000 boilers to rank the best LPG boilers, to help you make an informed decision.
What is an LPG boiler?
LPG boilers function like an ordinary gas boilers, only they use liquid petroleum gas (LPG) instead of gas supplied by the gas grid. This makes LPG boilers ideal for off-grid setups because they can heat homes without needing to be connected to the gas mains.
The other ways LPG boilers differ are:
They use an external storage tank to store fuel, which needs to be refilled and kept safe
You’ll need to regularly have fuel delivered to keep your LPG boiler’s storage tank topped up
LPG is more environmentally friendly than natural gas, producing less emissions overall
Are LPG boilers good for the environment?
LPG is one of the cleanest conventional fuels we have access to right now, especially when compared to oil and definitely when compared to coal. It emits up to 12% less emissions than oil, and 33% less than coal, and crucially, it emits no black carbon.
Black carbon is one of the biggest contributors to global warming and it comes from the particulates ejected into the atmosphere when we burn fuels such as coal.
That also means less indoor pollution when using LPG as fuel for boilers.

Best LPG Boilers (By Model)
Here are our picks of the best LPG boilers you can buy in the UK.
These boilers are the standout performers in a crowded market, with all having exceptional customer reviews, features, warranties, efficiency, powerful heating capabilities, and excellent after-care support.
The last point was especially important in our review criteria, because having reliable aftercare is a huge relief if or when issues with your boiler appear.
#1 Worcester Bosch Greenstar 4000
Our verdict: The best all-around LPG boiler on the market
Specifications:
Warranty: Up to 10 years | Energy Efficiency Rating: A | Output Rating (kW): Available in 25 and 30 kW options | Water Flow Rate (litres/minute): 10.5 or 12.3 depending on the model | Size H/W/D (mm): 724 × 400 × 310 | Price: Starts from approximately £1,152.99
Pros:
Works with popular smart home systems like Hive, Nest, and tado°.
Excellent customer support and aftercare services.
Comes with a 10-year guarantee when purchased through Heatable.
Quiet and ideal for noise-sensitive environments.
Great for medium-sized properties.
Cons:
Not great for larger homes.
Doesn’t have many of the advanced features found in Viessmann boilers.
More expensive than budget options such as Ideal.
If you’re at all familiar with our work, you might have spotted the Worcester Bosch Greenstar 4000 sitting pretty atop our list of best combi boilers. So it might seem unfair on the other boilers that this award-winning model pips the number one spot again.
We’re here to say it’s entirely justified because the Greenstar 4000 really is that good. Designed by leading boiler manufacturer Worcester Bosch, the Greenstar 4000 is the perfect middle ground for LPG boilers.
It comes with incredible reliability and excellent efficiency, capable of hitting 94% with ease. Speaking of reliability, reviews aren’t the be-all and end-all, but Worcester Bosch has a hugely impressive 4.6 out of 5 rating on Trustpilot, based on over 44,000 reviews as of September 2024.
Plus, the Greenstar 4000 can be either a combi boiler or a system boiler, which gives it great flexibility depending on your home’s needs.
For example, if your home has two or more bathrooms, you'll likely want a system boiler, which is a boiler that heats a hot water storage cylinder. Or, if it’s just the one bathroom, the combi boiler version will cover your hot water needs with ease.

Here’s a list of other features found on the Greenstar 4000 we want to sing about:
Quieter Operation: The Greenstar 4000 is impressively quiet, ensuring a less intrusive presence in your home.
Compatibility with Smart Controls: This boiler is compatible with all Worcester Bosch controls and popular third-party controllers such as Hive, Nest, and tado°, allowing for seamless integration into smart home systems.
Optimal for Small to Medium-Sized Homes: Its design and capabilities make it ideal for smaller and medium-sized homes, providing efficient heating without the bulk.
Ease of Maintenance: With removable side panels, the Greenstar 4000 is designed for easy access, simplifying maintenance and service tasks.
Extended Warranty: It comes with a 10-year guarantee on parts and labour when purchased through Heatable, providing long-term peace of mind.
High Energy Efficiency: With an ErP rating of 94%, it holds an A rating for energy efficiency, ensuring lower energy bills and reduced environmental impact.
Compact Dimensions: Measuring 710 x 400 x 310 mm, it is compact enough to fit discreetly within your home.
Why Choose the Worcester Bosch Greenstar 4000?
The Greenstar 4000 is the culmination of everything Worcester Bosch does right, building on a legacy of high-quality boilers, and unbeatable customer support and aftercare. There’s a reason the brand has won 14 consecutive Which? Best Buy Awards, something no other boiler brand has managed.
What’s more is the Greenstar 4000 is well-equipped for the future, as it's hydrogen blend ready, meaning it can use a mix of hydrogen and LPG when the former becomes widely available.
This points to the boiler’s green credentials too, as hydrogen (when obtained by electrolysis of water) is a very clean fuel source.
In short, homeowners looking for a boiler with great reliability, durability, efficiency, and ease of use, look no further than the Worcester Bosch Greenstar 4000.
#2 Viessmann Vitodens 200-W System
Our verdict: The most efficient LPG boiler on the market
Specifications:
Warranty: Up to 12 years | Energy Efficiency Rating: A | Output Rating (kW): Available in 11, 19, 25, and 32 kW options | Size H/W/D (mm): Approximately 700 × 450 × 360 | Price: Starts from around £1,650 (may vary based on output and supplier).
Pros:
Extremely high efficiency.
Compatible with solar thermal systems.
ErP A-rated for both heating and hot water efficiency.
Can be controlled using your phone.
The Viessmann Vitodens 200-W System will be able to use 20% hydrogen.
Cons:
One of the most expensive boilers on this list.
Likely too powerful for smaller homes.
Advanced features mean it might be overkill for homes with simpler heating needs.
Viessman is the world's leading manufacturer of heating systems and it’s clear it puts this expertise into boilers like the Vitodens 200-W System boiler. There’s a reason the company won the Which? Best Buy Awards from 2017 to 2024.
The Vitodens 200-W is just a little bigger than its baby brother, the 100-W, but it makes up for the added bulk with plenty of power. With the 25 kW version for example, you’ll comfortably heat a home with 15 or more radiators (the 32 kW can heat 20 or more radiators).
A feature we really loved was the boiler’s easy-to-understand 7-inch colour display. It’s touch controlled, so it feels super modern, but intuitive too. Everything you need to know is clearly displayed, such as temperature and energy consumption, and the menu is simple to navigate.
You can use your phone to control the boiler as well, via the ViCare app (available on the App Store and Google Play).
This boiler is also incredibly efficient, averaging around 94% efficiency but capable of reaching a mindblowing 98%. That basically means for every £1 of gas you put in, the Vitodens 200-W can output 98p of heating.
Consider that older boilers can be as inefficient as 60% and you quickly realise what a boiler from Viessman can save you in the long run!
Who may the Vitodens 200-W not be for?
The Vitodens 200-W boiler is a premium choice, costing around £1,650 for the unit alone (more than £2,500 if you include installation and the sundries).
Its advanced features and high efficiency also means it might not be worth spending the extra money if you have relatively simple needs.
For these reasons, you might want to consider the Vitodens 100-W, which is a more affordable but still very good boiler.
#3 Vaillant ecoTEC Pro 28
Our verdict: The best value boiler for small homes
Specifications:
Warranty: Up to 10 years | Energy Efficiency Rating: A | Output Rating (kW): Available in 28 and 30 kW options | Size H/W/D (mm): Approximately 720 × 440 × 338 | Price: Starts from around £1,200 (may vary based on output and supplier).
Pros:
Vaillant’s vSMART technology adapts to your heating needs, helping reduce energy waste.
A-rated for high efficiency.
Can be controlled using your phone.
Awarded Quiet Mark status, an award reserved for the quietest boiler models.
Cons:
As a premium brand, Vaillant isn’t the cheapest option.
The 10-year warranty requires the boiler to be installed by a Vaillant Advanced Installer.
You cannot get an LPG version of the smaller 24 kW model
For smaller homes or homes with smaller heating needs, the best LPG boiler on the market, in our humble opinion, is the Vaillant ecoTEC Pro 28.
We’ve reviewed the 28 kW version, which can more than keep up with the heating needs of a home with 12 or so radiators. If you’re in a home with 15 radiators, you might want to consider the 30 kW version instead.
One thing to be aware of, which we mentioned in our list of cons, is that the smaller 24 kW model isn’t capable of using LPG. Just in case you were tempted to cut out the middleman, install a boiler yourself (not recommended!), only to find out it doesn't work with your LPG setup.
A great feature of the ecoTEC Pro 28 is the inclusion of Vaillant’s vSMART technology. In short, this allows the boiler to adapt to the way you use your heating. It has a range of features such as weather compensation that enables you to limit your energy waste and save money on your heating bills.
Who may the ecoTEC Pro 28 not be for?
As a combi boiler, the ecoTEC pro 28 might struggle to heat larger homes. Combi boilers are great when it comes to hot water on demand, but only so long as the demand for hot water isn’t too much.
Say you have two or more bathrooms and several people in your family decide to have a shower at the same time. A combi boiler is going to struggle to provide a consistent flow of hot water and within minutes, you’ve got people yelling down the stairs about how bloomin’ cold the shower is.
The ecoTEC Pro 28 might also not be ideal for really small off-grid setups, because the 24 kW version isn’t compatible with LPG.
#4 Worcester Bosch Greenstar 8000
Our verdict: The best LPG boiler for larger homes
Specifications:
Warranty: Up to 10 years | Energy Efficiency Rating: A | Output Rating (kW): Available in 30, 35, 40 and 45 kW options (50 kW for the system boiler model) | Size H/W/D (mm): Approximately 780 × 440 × 365 | Price: Starts from around £2,500 (may vary based on output and supplier).
Pros:
The most powerful boiler available from Worcester Bosch.
Perfect for larger homes with multiple bathrooms.
High efficiency rating of 94%.
Stylish aesthetics (might be the first boiler you don’t want to hide in a cupboard).
20% hydrogen blend ready.
Has the highest water flow rate of any wall-hung combi boiler you can buy.
Cons:
The most expensive boiler on this list.
Quite large compared to other boilers.
Too big for small or medium-size properties.
Like its mid-range cousin, the Greenstar 4000, Worcester Bosch’s Greenstar 8000 really is a best-in-class boiler that deserves the praise heaped on it.
It improves upon the previous generation of Greenstar boilers in some key ways, including its approach to displaying important information. On the Greenstar 8000, a full-colour digital interface shows users changes to things like pressure in a way that’s easy to understand.
Older boilers would instead just, y’know, stop working abruptly with no warning that the pressure was dropping too low.
Here, the Greenstar 8000 tells you simply when a refill is needed, so you can keep the hot water flowing.
Also, for those who love a smart home, the Greenstar 8000 is the boiler for you. It’s fully compatible with the Bosch EasyControl smart thermostat, which itself is linked to a feature-rich app (downloadable from the App Store and Google Play).
With the app, you can easily adjust the heating wherever you are, so if you’re on your way back from work or holiday, you can get the heating ready for when you step through the door.
We loved that you could pick between a stylish white or sleek black colour for the Greenstar 8000 too. Genuinely, this a boiler you’d look at it and think “wow”.
Despite the standout looks, this boiler is whisper quiet, which is always a blessing. You can thank the high-quality engineering and materials used in making the Greenstar 8000 for that, and how this comes together to make this boiler run very efficiently.
Who may the Worcester Bosch Greenstar 8000 not be for?
This is the most expensive boiler on the list, so it’s definitely not for people looking to save money on buying a boiler. Nor is it for homes with small or even medium heating needs — the Greenstar 8000 is a beast (or a ‘beautiful beast’, as Worcester Bosch themselves have dubbed it) with its heating capabilities and is best for larger homes.
#5 Alpha E-Tec NX Boiler
Our verdict: The most affordable LPG boiler
Specifications:
Warranty: 7 (up to 10 when purchased via Heatable) | Energy Efficiency Rating: A | Output Rating (kW): Available in 28 and 33 kW options | Water Flow Rate (litres/minute): 12.1 or 14.1 depending on the model | Size H/W/D (mm): Approximately 712 × 440 × 255 | Price: Starts from around £860 (may vary based on output and supplier)
Pros:
Has a stainless steel heat exchanger, normally found on premium boilers.
High efficiency of 93%.
Small enough to fit inside a kitchen cupboard.
Compatible with all leading third-party controls such as Hive, Nest, tado°, etc.
Very affordable.
Cons:
Has a low modulation ratio of 1:6 (less efficient than the other boilers on this list).
Lacks the features offered in boilers from premium brands such as Viessmann and Worcester Bosch.
Alpha has slowly but surely been making a name for itself as one of the top choices for boilers, especially if you want to save some money without sacrificing too much quality.
Particularly its E-Tec NX range, which starts at an extremely reasonable £860 (not including installation). Consider that the starting price for a similarly sized Vaillant EcoTEC is £1,200 and getting an Alpha boiler begins to look a lot more attractive on the wallet.
What’s reassuring about Alpha is the warranty the E-Tec NX comes with — 7 years as standard, so it’s pretty clear Alpha trusts its boiler to last a while. If you get an Alpha boiler with Heatable, that warranty increases to 10 years.
So you can say we’re pretty confident in Alpha boilers too.
As are the public — a quick look at the reviews for the Alpha E-Tec NX on Trustpilot shows countless 5-star reviews. For a relative newcomer on the boiler scene, this is very impressive. Nice one Alpha, we’re rooting for you here at Heatable.
Who may the Alpha E-Tec NX not be for?
If your home has two or more bathrooms or more than 12 radiators, the Alpha E-Tec NX might struggle to provide enough hot water.
Also, Alpha doesn’t (yet) have the same reputation for quality as premium brands such as Worcester Bosch, Viessmann, or Vaillant. In our opinion, Alpha is definitely on the right track, but if you’re willing to spend on a premium boiler, the aforementioned brands are all but guaranteed to give you reliable quality.
