Boiler Manufacturers: The Best Boiler Brands Reviewed

This question is one almost every new boiler shopper is going to consider at some point.

In this post, we’ll take a deep dive into the world of boiler brands, explain some of the key differences between them and why some have such a good reputation, while some others have lagged behind in the battle to be named the best boiler brand champion.

You may have never given much consideration to boiler brands but are likely to have heard of household names like Worcester Bosch, Viessmann, Vaillant and Baxi

Much like you may have done Nike, Puma & Adidas.

...but you’d be understandably apprehensive about the longevity of a Diadora boiler.

So how do you know which boiler brand to choose?

If your boiler's super-old and looks way beyond repair, find out what replacement you need along with costs

Factors we considered when picking the best boiler brands

You want a boiler to be reliable, offer maximum value for money and to have a long life - like milk during an apocalypse.

Ultimately, these are the areas where the best boiler brands perform perfectly.

A decent warranty period is also a winning combination, as if something does go wrong, you want the guarantee that you will not be left in the lurch to deal with it yourself.

Lesser boiler brands will indeed leave you in said lurch.

So, to summarise, we considered the following factors when putting together our top 10 list:

  • Warranty period offered by the brand
  • The overall reputation of the brand based on customer reviews
  • TrustPilot reviews
  • Awards and accolades e.g. Which? Best Buy Awards
  • Customer service performance
  • The price range of their boilers
  • Efficiency ratings

Note: Most UK households use a combi boiler, so should you want a more in-depth analysis of these, make sure to check our best combi boiler article for the full rundown.

Which? Best Buy BoilerWorcester Bosch has a long history as being one of the best-selling and most trusted brands. Several of their combi boilers have been awarded a Which Best Buy Award for 10 consecutive years.

Worcester obtained status as the best boiler brand not just through product quality, but aftercare.

#2 Viessmann Boilers (2nd Best Boiler Manufacturer)

Viessmann Boilers 2nd Best

Dominating the European boiler market, Viessmann has a 5-star reputation thanks to their superb German engineering and simple, crisp designs. No ridge-cut here.

Now, breaking their way into the UK market, the Viessmann brand is building a solid reputation nationwide, for both reliability and quality whether you can pronounce their name, or not.

We’re reliably informed it’s ‘Veezman’.

Awarded a Which? Best Buy Award on 7 of their models, Viessmann has been described as a “very smart choice” by the trusted consumer organisation. They do ramble on.

Which? Best Buy Boiler

All Viessmann boilers are technically brilliant and this is a definitive advantage the brand has over rivals. For example, they use stainless steel heat exchangers as opposed to aluminium commonly used inside most other boiler brands.

A heat exchanger is pivotal and generates the hot water. Some boiler brands choose to neglect this component and construct them from lesser materials at the price of longevity. Picture a well built Roman gladiator, armed only with Scotch Eggs - it will be his downfall.

Viessmann Heat Exchanger

Stainless steel is more durable, better able to deal with sludge and withstand years of corrosion, two major culprits of boiler faults and failures.

If you prioritise quality above all else, then a Viessmann boiler may be the right choice for you and your home.  Check out our Viessmann Vitodemns 050 Review and Viessmann 100 Review for a more in-depth look into two of their most popular models.

#3 Alpha Boilers (3rd Best Boiler Manufacturer)

Alpha Boilers (6th Best)

Would mutton ever dress as lamb?

It seems so.

Disguised as, or accused of being a ‘budget’ boiler brand, Alpha have been quietly slotting nifty little bargain boilers into UK homes for years and totally forgot to advertise that fact.

Alpha boilers are a budget-option brand that has been increasing its market share in the UK wide boiler market over the last few years. They are a fantastic option for the buyer who is looking for a reliable and affordable heating solution with a moderate warranty length.

Although considered a budget boiler brand, on a technical level, Alpha’s products are excellent, for example, they utilise a stainless-steel heat exchanger which is usually something you would only expect in a premium brand like Viessmann.

Alpha E-Tec BoilerAlpha’s range of combi boilers are by far the most popular and they include the likes of the E-Tec, Intec or Evoke, and they are priced between £520 and £2,500.

Alpha offers a warranty of 7 years on their Alpha E Tec, but Heatable offers an exclusive 10 year warranty, which matches some of the premium brands.

The ever classy parents of Alpha, - the Italians - count Alpha as their countries #1 boiler brand and fourth  favourite thing in the world behind, olive oil, smoking and Andrea Pirlo’s hair.

Alpha is a superb choice for those wanting the best boiler (if on a budget).

#4 Ideal Boilers (4th Best Boiler Manufacturer)

Ideal Boilers (3rd best)

As their name implies, the Ideal brand does indeed create some ideal boilers. Not incredible, not awful. Just… ideal.

Established in 1906 in Kingston upon Hull, Ideal boilers have a long history in the UK home boiler market as a historic British brand with a reputation for excellence.

So far, so boring. But the Ideal brand has at least secured sponsorship of the equally boring, and arguably third best football team in the Midlands - West Brom.
Ideal Boiler Man

Ideal offers a comprehensive range of boilers from budget-friendly models to the more robust variety with all the bells and whistles and fancy features you could want.

Which? Best Buy Boiler

Vaillant has earned its right to sit amongst the other award-winning brands through churning out premium quality boilers longer than anybody would care to Google.

Made in the UK, Vaillant offers a variety of boiler types and sizes, engineered to an extremely high standard and backed by a hefty 10-year warranty.

Want to save money and energy on your heating bills? If so, you should consider installing one of the best smart thermostats.

Downsides? The only thing to exceed Vaillant's product quality is their price.

#6 BAXI Boilers (6th Best)

BAXI Boilers (5th Best)

With their manufacturing centre based in Preston, Lancashire, BAXI is another British made boiler brand with a solid offering of combi, regular and system boilers engineered to last the test of time.

Although not typically recognised as being a premier option in the heating industry overall, BAXI does have a nice selection of products, with healthy warranties and award-winning customer service. So, with all these factors in mind, if you are looking for a brand that offers maximum value for money, a BAXI may be the way to go.

It’s not necessarily all quality delivering on that time test, though. Rather quantity.

BAXI have produced more boilers in the last decade than Gillette have razors, and in doing so have inadvertently spoiled their own boiler broth.
Too many cooks

Choosing one of their very good boilers requires a roulette style gamble, or extensive research.

On the plus side, BAXI’s North Pole of boilers has commanded an army of boiler elves on hand to deliver awesome aftercare.

If excellent customer service and availability of parts are important to you, BAXI offers both.

#8 Potterton Boilers (8th Best)

Potterton Boilers (8th Best)

You haven’t heard of Potterton, I haven’t heard of Potterton. This one’s going to be quick.

That dumfounded and motionless stare of looking at somebody else’s TV remote? Just pop HDMI 2 on? Good one.

That feeling? That’s Potterton.

In the past, Potterton manufactured boilers for the premium end of the market only, but in recent years have launched a range of budget boilers, that has meant their warranty has been reduced to a measly 2 years, which may not offer the peace of mind many buyers are looking for.

Their combi boiler range includes the Promax, Titanium, Promax Ultra, Assure and Gold, and are priced between £675 and £1,350.

Apart from their short warranty period (on most models), Potterton do offer some technically brilliant boilers.

Potterton's marketing team are just trying to reach you telepathically, that’s all.

#9 Intergas Boilers (9th Best)

Intergas Boilers (9th Best)

Intergas is a relatively new boiler brand in the UK who boast that their boilers offer the fewest moving parts of any rival.

A feat that Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton team also achieved in 2020.

But as any good bank robber will tell you.. Nobody moves, nobody gets hurt. It’s similar for boilers.

As far as boilers go, the latest Intergas boilers are extremely attractive, offering sleek, contemporary designs, super modern LED displays and remote-control systems for ultimate convenience and user-friendliness. Like Ryan Gosling with a Go-Pro on.

They offer two combi ranges, Rapid and Compact, which are priced between £630 and £1,040 and a warranty ranging from 3 years up to 7 years depending on the exact model you choose.

If you're on the hunt for a boiler that looks sleek and has a quality build, then Intergas may be an option to consider.
