Do I Need a New Boiler?
There are a range of scenarios in which it is probably best to have your boiler replaced and somewhere you really need to like if your boiler is totally busted.
Cases where you should probably have your boiler replaced include:
- If it is particularly old.
- The boiler breaks down regularly.
- You're losing money due to an old inefficient boiler.
- The guarantee has run out and you often need to pay for repairs or/and replacement parts*
- Expensive parts like the heat exchanger or PCB need to be repaired or/and replaced*
*These are two clear examples of a boiler being beyond economical repair (BER). In general, if a boiler is BER, you should have it replaced.
What else should you know?...
Boilers tend to last 10-15 years but over time their running costs increase. This is just one of the reasons why an old and inefficient boiler can cost you more over time than simply replacing it even if it is technically still in working order.
You’ll need to replace your boiler eventually so if it is old and inefficient, an early replacement could save you money overall.
Old boilers (more than a decade old to be precise) are G-rated and therefore have efficiency levels of 70%. Modern A-rated boilers, on the other hand, are generally more eco-friendly and come with efficiency ratings of 90% or more.
To give you a sense of how A-rated boiler running rates differ from that of G-rated boilers, you should consider that with a G-rated boiler, for every £1 spent, some 30p would be totally wasted (70p being applicable due to a 70% efficiency rating). On the other hand, an A-rated boiler would waste only 10p or less.
This means that to get a full one-pound sterling of energy in actuality, you’d need to spend about £1.43 with an old G-rated boiler but only somewhere in the range of £1.07 to £1.12 with an A-rated boiler.
You can see, how, over time, this could save you quite a bit of cash, especially over a timeline of multiple years.
With time the case to have a boiler replaced will grow stronger even if the boiler is still functioning and passes its servicing checks.
