NIBE comes from Sweden, where designing a heat pump that stops working when it gets cold would presumably be considered quite a serious design flaw.
The NIBE S2125 is its premium air-to-water heat pump for existing homes and new builds.
It uses R290 refrigerant, achieves an A+++ energy rating, can produce flow temperatures of up to 75°C and will continue operating with outdoor temperatures as low as -25°C.
The 8kW and 12kW models are also Quiet Mark certified, while NIBE's S-Series controls bring some genuinely clever energy-management features into the equation.
Lovely.
Unfortunately, it also sits firmly towards the premium end of the market.

What is the NIBE S2125?
The S2125 is a monobloc air source heat pump.
The outdoor unit extracts heat from the air, increases its temperature using a compressor and transfers that heat into the water circulating around your heating system.
It still works when it's freezing outside.
There is, fortunately, no requirement to move Sweden underneath your patio.
The S2125 can be combined with NIBE's indoor equipment and S-Series controls to provide heating and domestic hot water, with different configurations available depending on the property.
The current UK range includes 8kW, 12kW, 16kW and 20kW variants, giving it considerably more headroom for larger properties than some competing ranges.
Performance and efficiency: 5/5
This is where the NIBE earns its premium positioning.
Technical data for the established S2125 models shows seasonal efficiency around SCOP 5.0 at a 35°C flow temperature, dropping as water temperature increases.
That's exactly what we'd expect.
Heat pumps are generally happiest producing warm water rather than pretending to be gas boilers.
NIBE itself quotes an S2125 SCOP of around 4.8 at 35°C and 3.59 at 55°C in its UK guidance.
That difference is important.
If an installer can design your home to remain comfortable at 40°C rather than 55°C, you're likely to get considerably more from the same heat pump.
What about that 75°C flow temperature?
The S2125 can reach 75°C and continue providing flow temperatures of up to around 65°C in exceptionally cold conditions.
That's useful for retrofit installations where replacing every radiator isn't practical.
But don't misunderstand the specification.
75°C is capability, not ambition.
Think of it like the rev limiter on your car. Useful to know where it is. Slightly worrying if you're hitting it every time you go to Tesco.
How quiet is the NIBE S2125?
Very.
NIBE quotes a nominal sound-power level of 49dB(A) for the established 8kW and 12kW versions, while both models have achieved Quiet Mark certification.
The manufacturer's example calculations put nominal sound pressure for these models at approximately:
44dB(A) at one metre
38dB(A) at two metres
30dB(A) at five metres
Those are calculated figures under specific conditions rather than a promise of what every garden will sound like.
Walls, fences, corners and installation position can all affect perceived noise.
In other words, don't wedge it between two brick walls beneath your neighbour's bedroom and then blame Sweden.
Controls and smart features
NIBE is particularly good here.
The S2125 works with the company's S-Series control platform, with remote control and monitoring available through the myUplink app.
NIBE also advertises solar PV integration and machine-learning features designed to adapt operation to the characteristics of the home.
That's considerably more useful than simply putting Wi-Fi on a thermostat and calling it smart.
Weather compensation and intelligent control can have a real effect on heat-pump efficiency because the system can reduce flow temperatures when the weather becomes milder rather than producing unnecessarily hot water all year.
Reliability: 4.5/5
NIBE has been manufacturing heating equipment for decades and comes from a market where heat pumps are hardly exotic technology.
That's reassuring.
The S2125 is also a monobloc unit, meaning the refrigerant circuit remains factory sealed within the outdoor unit.
The bigger variable is likely to be the installation.
Heat pumps are unusually intolerant of bad system design. Incorrect sizing, unnecessary buffers, badly configured controls and undersized emitters can turn excellent hardware into a mediocre heating system surprisingly quickly.
So we'd place considerably more value on finding a genuinely experienced NIBE installer than shaving another few hundred pounds off the equipment price.
Warranty: 3.5/5
This is the bit we'd improve.
NIBE's standard warranty provides two years of parts and labour cover, with registration required within 28 days and servicing conditions applying.
NIBE Pro Installers can provide five years of parts and labour cover.
Five years is respectable.
Two years on a premium heating system costing thousands of pounds is rather less exciting.
If you're getting quotes, make sure the five-year warranty is explicitly included rather than assuming the words "NIBE Pro" somewhere on the paperwork magically create it.

There isn't a universally best heat pump.
NIBE's particular strength is combining very high efficiency, proper cold-climate engineering and unusually sophisticated controls.
If those things matter more than finding the cheapest quotation, it makes a compelling case.
Heatable Verdict
The NIBE S2125 is a seriously good heat pump.
Its efficiency figures are amongst the strongest in this class, the 75°C maximum flow temperature gives installers plenty of retrofit flexibility and its ability to continue working at -25°C should put to bed most concerns about whether heat pumps work when Britain experiences weather.
The controls are excellent too.
Where NIBE loses marks is mainly around the surrounding package rather than the machine itself.
It's expensive, and we'd expect more than a two-year standard warranty from equipment at this end of the market.
Get the five-year cover, find an installer who actually understands low-temperature system design and resist the temptation to run it permanently at 70°C, though, and there isn't much to complain about.

The S2125 feels exactly like you'd expect a Swedish heat pump to feel: slightly over-engineered, unusually comfortable in terrible weather and rather expensive.
Fortunately, it's also very good.
