Quick Takeaways:
The Viessmann Vitodens 200-W was the quietest boiler we tested, producing just 36 decibels!
Quiet boilers use a clever mix of insulated casings, advanced fans, and modulating burners to make as little sound as possible.
If you hear rumbling, gurgling, or rattling sounds coming from your boiler, it’s time to think about getting a new boiler.
Common causes of noisy boilers include limescale building up, a faulty ignition, air trapped in the heating system, and your boiler losing pressure.
What Makes Boilers Noisy?
There are all sorts of reasons your boiler might be giving Motörhead a run for their money, but generally, a noisy boiler is a sign it’s about time to consider replacing it. Nonetheless, here’s a bingo list of the common reasons behind a noisy boiler:
Your boiler has a buildup of limescale — this can cause your boiler to make a whistling (kettling) sound. The limescale can cover key components and overheat, leading to the distinctive whistling.
The ignition system has failed — if you hear clicking and tapping sounds, chances are your boiler’s ignition isn’t working anymore. You’ll need to hire a Gas Safe engineer to come look at your boiler, as fixing a broken ignition system is definitely not DIY-friendly. Luckily, we’re pretty good when it comes to boiler repairs and servicing.
Air is trapped in the system — gurgling sounds are mostly likely caused by air trapped in your radiators, and the best way to fix this is by bleeding your radiators.
There’s a leak — if you hear dripping sounds, there’s almost certainly a leak in your boiler and this can be a critical issue. Leaks can damage components, increasing the risk your boiler could fail. Like with a faulty ignition system, you should contact a Gas Safe engineer to take a look at a boiler with a leak.
As a general rule of thumb, if your boiler starts making any sort of sound beyond what it normally does, it might be faulty. Or, it might be getting to the end of its life, because no matter how good a boiler might be, it won’t last forever.
And when it does eventually give up the ghost, you’ll want a new boiler. Why not think about getting one of the quiet boilers on this list?
How We Ranked the Quietest Boilers
We ranked the UK’s quietest boilers according to how each model performed in decibel (dB) ratings, efficiency, reliability, and customer reviews.
As we’re looking at the quietest, decibel levels had a lot of weight in our decisions, but we made sure each boiler featured was an amazing model regardless of how quiet they were.
Quiet Mark Certification
We’ve also factored in whether a boiler has been awarded the Quiet Mark certification, a globally recognised standard for identifying the quietest appliances.
A boiler with this accreditation has passed super strict noise reduction and acoustic tests, so it’s a great sign to look out for.
What Makes a Boiler Quiet?
There are a few factors that affect how quiet or loud a boiler might be:
Insulated casing — a boiler with a properly insulated casing is going to be a lot quieter than a boiler without (or one with a poorly insulated case). Boilers have a lot going on within, so it’s important to make sure the sounds of the internal happenings are dampened as much as possible.
Modulating burners — boilers with modulating burners are capable of adjusting power levels to meet the level of heat needed, instead of simply being on or off. What this means for sound is that a boiler with a modulating burner will be quieter overall, because when less power is needed, the boiler doesn’t need to work as hard.
Advanced fan technology — fans in boilers are designed to blow away any toxic fumes in your house, and advanced fans in the quietest boilers do this with minimal sound.
The Quietest Boilers You Can Get
Viessmann Vitodens 200-W

Fuel | Output | Warranty | Efficiency | Cost |
Gas | 32kW | Up to 12 years | 98% | £1,650 |
Our pick for the quietest boiler on this list, the Viessmann Vitodens 200-W is quite literally whisper-quiet at 36dB. That’s the audible equivalent of the soft hum of a fridge, and less than the 40dB of a library.
So if you want a boiler that’s as sonically unobtrusive as can be, the Vitodens 200-W from German manufacturer Viessmann is comfortably the best pick. There isn’t another boiler we could find that dipped below 40dB and it’s seriously impressive how quiet Viessmann got this model to run.
What’s equally impressive is how efficient the Vitodens 200-W is, hitting a bonkers rating of 98%. In layman’s terms, that means for every £1 of fuel you put into the boiler, it’ll produce 98p’s worth of heating — easily the most efficient quiet boiler on this list.
The downside? It’s not a cheap boiler and you’ll pay upwards of £1,650 (not including installation). Plus, this is a boiler designed for large homes with big heating needs, so as quiet as it might be, it could be too much for the average UK home.
Customer reviews
Viessmann gets a 4.4 out 5 star rating on Trustpilot – pretty great overall, but not as high as we’d expected considering how good its boilers tend to be. If you’re curious, we found that most negative reviews highlighted the customer service as needing improvement.
Quiet Mark Accredited?
Despite being the quietest boiler we’d tested, the Vitodens 200-W doesn’t have a Quiet Mark certification, which really surprised us. However, we have little doubt that if Viessmann were to submit the excellent 200-W, it’d get the Quiet Mark with ease!
Worcester Bosch 2000

Fuel | Output | Warranty | Efficiency | Cost |
Gas | 25kW | Up to 7 years | 98% | £1,895 |
The second quietest boiler is the Worcester Bosch 2000, a model from the company voted the UK’s number one boiler manufacturer. At just 43dB, this boiler purrs at an ambient level as it keeps your radiators warm and your water hot.
Though louder than the Vitodens 200-W, we’re talking a mere fraction here. In all honesty, if you directly compared them you’d be hard pressed to find a noticeable difference.
Where you will find a difference however, is in the efficiency rating – the 2000 has 93% to the Vitoden 200-W’s industry-leading 98%. It might not sound like much, but over a long enough period of time, you will start to notice the savings difference between the two boilers.
Customer reviews
Worcester Bosch has managed a 4.6 out of 5 rating on Trustpilot, a rating that looks even better when you realise this is from an eye-watering 46,457 independent reviews (as of March 2025).
Quiet Mark Accredited?
Yes, Worcester Bosch has run its Greenstar 2000 through the Quiet Mark gauntlet and come through unscathed. Not only the Greenstar 2000, but the Greenstar 4000 as well (in case you want a quiet boiler with a little more oomph.
Ideal Logic Max C35
Fuel | Output | Warranty | Efficiency | Cost |
Gas | 24.2kW | Up to 10 years | 94% | £1,380 |
Ideal boilers are viewed as middle-of-the-road in boiler terms, sitting below premium brands such as Viessmann and Worcester Bosch, but above budget boilers such as those from Baxi.
The Ideal Logic Max C35 is no different, costing around £1,380 (not including installation) and having a good mix of quality components that just set it higher than boilers from cheaper manufacturers.
It’s also quiet enough to earn the third spot here, hitting a maximum of 44dB when in operation. This is akin to birds chirping in the morning, though likely not as relaxing! Or, more relaxing if you’re as into boilers as we are.
Customer reviews
Ideal has an ideal rating (sorry, not sorry) of 4.8 out 5 on Trustpilot, and like Worcester Bosch, this is all the more impressive when you look at the number of reviews — 54,251 people simply adore this boiler brand.
Quiet Mark Accredited?
Ideal submitted its Logic Max boilers (and its Plus boilers, for the record) to Quiet Mark to see if they passed the test, and we’re pleased to report they passed with flying colours.
Vaillant ecoTEC Plus

Fuel | Output | Warranty | Efficiency | Cost |
Gas | 40kW | Up to 10 years | 94% | £1,890 |
We love Vaillant boilers and there’s a reason the German manufacturer is considered one of the most reliable boiler brands in the UK. Each time it releases a boiler, Vaillant simply knocks it out of the park and we’ve yet to see a boiler we don’t think is excellent.
The ecoTEC Plus is no different, getting 5s out of 5s in reliability and performance in our review. While we didn’t mention how quiet it was in there… we’re singing about it here – 45dB is a delicate ambience in the boiler world and you won’t notice it when it’s heating your home.
It’s a flexible boiler too, coming in the following sizes (power outputs):
26kW
32kW
36kW
40kW
Basically, the ecoTEC Plus is a fantastic boiler for most homes, though the very largest of properties might want to look at something like the Worcester Bosch Greenstar 8000 for their heating needs.
Customer reviews
Vaillant’s reviews on Trustpilot are a little less than stellar, we won’t lie. 20,755 people have given Vaillant a rating of 3.8 out of 5, which while certainly not a bad score, is less than you’d expect for a premium brand. A few of the negative reviews we saw mentioned a 10-year warranty shrinking to five years without warning.
Quiet Mark Accredited?
Vaillant has been vigilant with applying for (and getting) Quiet Mark accreditations for its boilers, including those in the ecoTEC range. It's getting top (quiet) marks here!
ATAG i24
Fuel | Output | Warranty | Efficiency | Cost |
Gas | 23.2kW | Up to 14 years | 94% | £1,300 |
ATAG might not be the best known brand on this list (it only started operating in the UK in 2014), but its boilers are still top notch. The i range, specifically the i24, is our pick for the 5th quietest boiler on this list, producing 46dB.
Now, 46dB is still a very quiet boiler, especially compared to older models that could reach 60dB or higher. Compared to the Viessmann 200-W however, you’ll notice the sound made by the ATAG i24 more. If it’s kept away in a cupboard or the like though, it’ll still be practically unnoticeable among the sounds of daily life.
One standout feature of the ATAG i24 is its incredible 14-year warranty, which is the longest on this list and all but a guarantee that ATAG believes in its boilers.
Customer reviews
ATAG has a really solid reputation among the smallish pool of customers it has in the UK, with a rating on Trustpilot of 4.6 out of 5 (based on 4,767 reviews). In our opinion, ATAG is a boiler brand to watch and we wouldn’t be surprised if it’s right up near the top of the pile in a decade or so.
Quiet Mark Accredited?
We think ATAG is a rising star in the UK’s boiler market, and it’s gone the extra mile already by getting its boilers certified for a Quiet Mark accreditation. Nice one ATAG, nice one.
Ideal Vogue Max C26
Fuel | Output | Warranty | Efficiency | Cost |
Gas | 18kW | Up to 10 years | 93% | £1,280 |
The second boiler from Ideal on this, the Vogue Max C26 might not be quite as quiet as its cousin the Logic Max C35 (47dB for the C26, versus 44dB for the C35), but it’s still a brilliant boiler.
It’s got excellent efficiency (93%), premium components, and an A rating in both hot water and heating efficiency.
However, with a power output of just 18kW, the Vogue Max C26 isn’t a boiler heating a mansion any time soon. At this output, the C26 will function best when it’s heating no more than 10 radiators, and it’ll struggle to cope if more than one person decides to shower at the same time.
Baxi 830

Fuel | Output | Warranty | Efficiency | Cost |
Gas | 32kW | Up to 10 years | 93% | £955 |
Baxi is a British brand going all the way back to 1866, so you know it’s got the experience and knows how to make a good boiler. But can Baxi make a quiet boiler?
Spoiler alert: yes it can; the Baxi 830 might be ‘last’ in the list, but it still only produces 48dB. This is the equivalent of a normal conversation, and when you factor in that the boiler will usually be hidden away in a cupboard, the sound is unlikely to bother you.
As for the boiler’s performance, it’s solid, with an efficiency rating of 93%, a 10-year warranty, and an extremely attractive price point of just £955. It’s low-ish output of 21.2kW means it’ll be best suited for small to medium-sized properties, so keep this in mind if your heating needs are particularly high.
Customer reviews
With 66,600 reviews as of March 2025, Baxi has the most people reviewing it on Trustpilot out of any manufacturer on this list. How did it do from this many reviews? Very well in fact, the people have spoken and given Baxi a score of 4.6 out of 5. Tidy.
Quiet Mark Accredited?
No, the Vogue Max C26 hasn’t been awarded a Quiet Mark certification. Don’t let this make you think it’s a loud boiler because trust us when we say it’s anything but. Additionally, there’s every chance Ideal simply hasn't submitted the Vogue Max C26 for testing yet.
