The Worcester Bosch Greenstar 30i: Review, specs, price and advice

Similar to Anthony Joshua, the Greenstar i is pretty, packs a punch and is the UK's favourite. But, does it really have the credentials knock out all of the opposition? Delve in to our brief but wickedly useful review.

The Worcester Greenstar 30i might well be one of the UK's most popular boilers, having earned money from the pockets of thousands.

But so did PPI, and we all know how that ended. Or never ended.

An review of the Worcester Bosch Greenstar 30i: All of its ups & and all of its downs

Worcester have been churning out boilers since before Coronation Street started and rightfully earned the respect of UK homeowners and boiler installation companies alike.

Worcester Bosch Greenstar 30i ReviewThe Worcester Greenstar 30i is straight from the 'Greenstar i' range, joining the Worcester Greenstar 25i - Worcester's cheapest and most popular combi boiler, in fact the same boiler - just a 5kW's less powerful. See our boiler size guide for more details on kW's.

The Greenstar i is their 'entry level' range of combi boilers and still boasts some great features, not least of which an A-rating for efficiency, a pleasingly novel digital display and a reassuring 'Which?' Best Buy Award.

During the early noughties, a staggeringly arrogant independent company by the name of 'Which?' decided to start rating products and services. After feeling patronised by them for a decade, we have realised they do recommend some outstanding products.

Are there any better alternatives to a Greenstar 30i?

At Heatable, we don't install Greenstar 30i's. Not because they're no good, we just think Viessmann boilers are far better. They topped the Which? Best Buy list for reliability, boast a huge 10 year warranty and have rock solid componentry.

Worcester Greenstar 30i, top perk:

Greenstar 30i PerkYou'll have got yourself a Worcester, feeling the relief of that peer pressure and convincing yourself it's great because - it's a Worcester, so it has to be? (maybe not so, more on that further down)

But you will still certainly have got yourself a decent boiler and with likely no less than a 5-year warranty.

Worcester Greenstar 30i, drawbacks:

Greenstar 30i drawbacksHaving established themselves as a trusted household name, the prices of Worcester Greenstar 30i's have risen in correlation, so you'll certainly be paying a premium.

If you're hellbent on investing in the Worcester Greenstar 30i, then do make sure that you really need every Kilowatt of those 30kW's. If you can get away with the Worcester Greenstar 25i, then you could save yourself a nice wedge.

Moreover, in our humble opinion, it isn't actually the best boiler in - what should be - its price range. Check out our similar recommendations below, or save yourself the time and invest in the Viessmann Vitodens 050-W right now.

The most problematic drawback besides the Worcester Greenstar 30i's price mark is its heat-exchanger. Made from an aluminium alloy as opposed to a number of its competitors showing off apocalypse surviving stainless steel heat-exchangers.

What is the Worcester Greenstar 30i heat-exchanger alloyed with? We're not certain but it could well be kidney beans and Worcestershire crumbly cheese.

Stainless steel heat-exchangers are vital when looking for a long lasting new combi boiler.

So what makes the Worcester Greenstar 30i tick? A delve into the details

Here are those stats:

  Worcester What we think
ErP efficiency rating A That's one more than B, you can't beat that. We checked.
LPG compatible Yes Enjoy your fuel in liquid form? No problem.
Solar compatible Yes Preparing for the apocalypse? Great.
Dimensions (H,W,D) 690mm x 390mm x 280mm Not too big, not too small. The Goldilocks of boilers.
Seasonal efficiency 89.6% We'll call that 90% - Nice!
Display Digital Obviously. It's 2019.

Beyond the boring - yet impressive - statistics, Worcester Bosch also made their Greenstar remarkably simple to use, with a clear informative display, a freeze-proof condensate pipe to reduce winter breakdowns, a low energy pump which reduces electrical consumption and most importantly - instantaneous hot water.

An embarrassment of riches - not so modestly displayed.

So, should you buy a Worcester Greenstar 30i?

Majestic as the Worcester Bosch 30i may be, there are still a small number of other boilers that can better them for stats and reviews - not many - but some.

As we've stated, you could consider a Viessmann Vitodens 050-WIdeal Logic Max, or a Baxi Platinum.

Customers reviews for Viessmann range from 'outstanding' to 'positively life altering'. An industry survey even found that the Viessmann Vitodens 050-W 29kW salvaged no less than seven failing marriages across the UK in 2018. Something which still has their competitors baffled.

We recently wrote a massive guide on the best combi boilers for 2019, and Worcester didn't quite make the top 3.

However, boiler buying is often about getting the best for your budget and making sure you get a great warranty.
