Potterton was founded over a century ago in 1850 and is a notable name in the UK heating market, recognised as the first brand to release the first gas boiler (the Diplomat gas boiler was released in 1955).
Potterton Boilers was previously a boiler manufacturer that specialised in premium, reliable boilers exclusively, but in recent years they have expanded their ranges to offer both mid-range and value-range models.
Today, the brand offers a variety of different boilers including combi, system and regular boilers to meet the needs of homes with a range of different hot water demands.
In this guide, we will explore Potterton’s most popular boilers, their reputation, aftercare and overall reputation. We will then provide you with our verdict and hopefully enough info so that you can come to your own conclusion too.

History of Potterton
Potterton was founded in 1850 and since there was no demand for residential boilers, nor was the technology that advanced, they specialised in industrial applications.
That was until things changed in 1902 when the company realised the technology had finally arrived and they launched their very first residential boiler, named the ‘Victor’.
In 1955, the company launched the UK’s very first gas boiler, called the Diplomat gas boiler, which truly revolutionized the UK’s domestic boiler market and by 1969 they had installed their millionth boiler.
Potterton continued with their reputation for being industry innovators and in 1970 they released their wall-hung boiler model, once again transforming boiler design and use in the country.
In recent years Potterton has been bought by industry titan Baxi, yet the two companies continue to offer their own unique boiler ranges.
Potterton Gas Combi Boilers
What is a combi boiler?
Combination (or combi boilers) are the UK’s most common type of domestic boiler, installed and used in as many as 70% of properties.
They are often preferred since they provide both heating water and hot water from a single unit. This means they are the most space-saving type of boiler and can be housed in a small space like kitchen cupboards, making them more suitable than other types of boilers that also require adequate space for a hot water storage cylinder.
Combined with the high efficiency of modern A-rated condensing models, which help to maximise energy use, combi boilers are ideal for the majority of homes.

The price of a Potterton boiler
Even though a typical quote includes Gas Safe Installation, a manufacturer’s warranty and a workmanship guarantee (when purchased through Heatable), many people are interested to know the price of a standalone boiler.
Prices for a standalone Potterton combi boiler can range between £845 to £2000 and are available in a range of sizes, although it is worth remembering that Gas Safe installation is a legal requirement and you may also require additional materials, depending on your property and the type of installation required.
Got a quote for a Potterton boiler which is less than £1000, fitted? Then, it’s extremely likely that it’s not legitimate.
Heatable offers a fixed price on (Gas Safe) combi boiler installations online and can be fitted as quick as tomorrow. Use our free quick calculator to get a price on the screen instantly (takes 60 seconds).

Potterton Gas Regular Boilers: Price Range
Potterton also manufactures a range of regular boilers (also called conventional boilers) and like combination or combi boilers they can provide homes with both hot water and heating.
However, unlike a combi boiler, they do not work as a single unit, instead, they require a hot water storage cylinder and a header tank in the loft, which all take up substantially more space and make installation more complex.
However, some properties will require a regular boiler, since their hot water demand will exceed what can be supplied by a combi boiler. For example, properties with multiple bathrooms and many radiators will require a boiler to keep up with the hot water demand and maintain the water pressure.
The price of a standalone Potterton regular boiler ranges from £670 to £2000. Yet, as with a combi boiler, it’s important to factor in other unavoidable costs such as installation, parts and any extras.
Please note: it is usually only recommended that you opt for a regular boiler if you have low pressure from the mains and/or you already have a regular boiler installed and want to minimise the costs and disruption that may occur when converting to a different type of boiler.

Potterton Gas System Boilers: Price Range
System boilers are essentially a modern and upgraded version of the regular/conventional boiler and similarly, they are more appropriate for homes with hefty hot water demands e.g. properties with multiple bathrooms and water outlets that may be in use simultaneously.
They are unique to regular boilers in that they have more internal components e.g. their own water pump, meaning no water tank is required to be stored in the loft.
Like combi boilers, they heat water from the mains water supply but instead of diverting it directly to water outlets e.g. taps, baths or showers, it is stored in a hot water tank.
The price of a standalone Potterton system boiler ranges from £635 to £1900 and they are available in a range of different sizes. However, remember that he is for the boiler alone. Not the flue, controls, installation or anything else that’s essential or you may like to have.

Why should I buy a Potterton boiler?
Potterton Boilers Warranty Period
You want to know that if your boiler breaks down in the middle of winter you be able to get it back in working order as soon as possible, preferably free of charge. That’s why your new boiler’s warranty is so important.
So what type of warranty does Potterton offer?
Potterton’s boiler warranty ranges from as little as 1 year to 10, depending on the boiler model and installation service you choose. In addition, some boiler models include a warranty on parts and labour, while others only cover parts such as the heat exchanger.
For example, the Potterton Titanium Gas combi boiler comes with a 5-year warranty as standard, while the Potterton Gold comes with a 2-year warranty.
This isn’t great, especially when you start to compare it to other boiler manufacturers’ warranty offerings. For example, a boiler guarantee offered with Worcester Bosch boilers is 10 years (when purchased via Heatable).
Do they have any awards?
Potterton Customer Reviews
What do customers think of Potterton? Nothing quite compares to the honesty and feedback from everyday users of the product and aftercare.
Unfortunately Potterton Residential has a poor score on Trustpilot. As of March 2021, just 4 customers left a review.
The brand has an average rating of 2.6 stars out of 5, which is very poor for a company with such a long history in the heating industry.
Potterton Error Codes
No matter the boiler brand you choose, over time it’s likely to experience some issues, whether that be minor or not.
Therefore, an annual boiler service is essential to ensure the boiler continues to operate at its optimum and safely. Moreover, without an annual service, most manufacturers will void the warranty or guarantee, so avoiding it may end up costing you a substantial amount of money.
If your boiler is experiencing a fault, most manufacturers, including Potterton boilers display an error code on the interface.
Although these codes aren’t entirely reliable, they can help provide an indication as to the source of the boiler problem, so that you can potentially carry out a quick DIY fix e.g. if it’s a pressure issue.
Or help a registered Gas Engineer more efficiently diagnose the issue should they need to consult the user manual or access the boiler’s internal components.
Common Potterton Error Codes
The fault code will provide an indication of the problem your boiler is experiencing and will often give you a clue as to whether it’s a severe issue requiring the assistance of a registered Gas Safe Engineer.
It can also tell you if it’s a minor issue that can be quickly fixed by yourself, for example, if your boiler pressure needs topping up.

Potterton Boilers Verdict
Potterton is a well-established brand in the UK market with a good selection of boilers, including combi, regular and system boilers. They are also available in a wide variety of different sizes/power outputs, so you will easily be able to acquire one that will meet your home’s hot water demands.
However, having said that, we would probably recommend a different boiler brand, you can see how we ranked the UK’s most popular boiler manufacturers in our best boiler brands guide.
Worcester Bosch ranked number one, while Viessmann ranked number two, so we would advise a boiler from one of these two brands before a Potterton.
Why?
Which Best Buy Award winner for 14 consecutive years
Which? Is a reputable consumer advice organisation that carries out thorough testing and impartial reviews.
So it’s a pretty big deal that Worcester Bosch has won the award 14 years in a row, receiving several high 5-star ratings the consumer choice organisation considers most important to consumers, including full marks for their build quality and availability of parts and spares.
PS You can check our complete review of one of Worcester’s most popular boiler models in our Youtube video below:
A 10-Year Guarantee not just a “warranty”
Most major boiler manufacturers offer a warranty, but Worcester Bosch offers a guarantee instead.
Sounds like clever marketing, what's the difference?
Most other boiler manufacturers just offer a warranty as standard, this is an agreement to investigate the problem, but is not an unconditional agreement to fix or repair it for free.
Availability of parts
Worcester Bosch has earned itself an industry-wide reputation for having parts that are very easy to source in the UK, which is extremely handy if you want your boiler fixed quickly.
In conclusion, if you are looking for a new boiler that offers all the best selling points from a consumer’s perspective, Worcester Bosch wins hands down.
They offer the best warranty in the form of a 10-year Guarantee, they have 5-star reviews, and amazing aftercare and their availability of parts is also second to none.
